Annual Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens

March 24-27, 2011

For the past 75 years, Savannah has played host to the Annual Tour of Homes & Gardens which offers residents and visitors alike a rare opportunity to enter some of the City’s finest private homes.  HSF partners with the Women of Christ Church to host the Tour–giving participants the chance to admire restored interiors and special furnishings that have been treasured by families for generations.  In addition to a variety of walking tours, guests will enjoy seminars, special trolley tours, evening events and some of the best food and hospitality the South has to offer.
Savannah is home to the largest urban landmark historic district in the United States.  In this 2.5 square mile area, there is an astonishingly well-preserved city encompassing the beauty, architecture and history of the old South.  Savannah was founded in 1733 by General James Edward Oglethorpe whose colonial plan was based on a grid of residences and broad thoroughfares with spacious public squares at regular intervals.  This design has not only been preserved, but it has become the foundation upon which the Hostess City built its preservation reputation over the last six decades.  Oglethorpe’s plan remains largely intact with 21 oak-canopied squares surrounded by lovely homes and churches which give Savannah a character of its own.

Artists and Naturalists in Georgia: Philip Juras and John Abbot Programs
Telfair’s Jepson Center

Examining the intersection of art and nature in exhibitions by artists Philip Juras, John Abbot, and Floyd Robbins, the Telfair will present a series of educational programs further exploring this important relationship. The timely series also anticipates the worldwide observance of Earth Day on April 22—held annually to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the earth's environment.

The Telfair will present a lecture by Philip Juras on the state of the environments described by William Bartram as they exist today. The museum will also present a talk by historian Vivian Rogers-Price, author of two books on John Abbott. An Art and Nature Family Day event will feature presentations by Oatland Island Educational Center and programs focused on Bartram’s time, including the “Music of Colonial Georgia” by David and Ginger Hildebrand. A workshop for teens and young adults will introduce techniques for documenting local flora and fauna with the goal of producing portfolio quality works, and the resulting images will be displayed after the workshop at the Jepson Center.
