KCC Profiles: Charles Way

Who is Charles?

I was born and raised in Savannah, GA with my older siblings Angie, Andy, and Becky, my identical twin brother David, and my fraternal triplet sister Kathryn.  Being a triplet was weird sometimes.  On the first day of freshman biology, my brother, sister, and I were all in different periods but we all chose the same desk.  And when my twin brother broke his leg in 1st grade, I could feel his pain.  Because I fell off the top bunk in my sleep and my face landed on his cast.  We grew up on Isle of Hope where our pets were only allowed to be named after characters from The Andy Griffith Show, thanks to my Dad.  They included Barney the golden retriever, Otis the golden retriever, Sherriff Taylor the goat, Thelma Lou the goat, Thelma Lou II the goat, and Opie the turtle.  We were the only kids on the island that had to walk around the neighborhood every few days asking, “Excuse me, have you seen my goat?  She answers to Thelma Lou”.  My childhood was generally good despite some ups and downs.  We played a lot of sports and mostly stayed out of trouble, except for that one time the cops were called to Senator Eric Johnson’s house because we used his yard as base camp to moon passing cars.
I went to high school at H.V. Jenkins and had mostly reformed by then.  After their divorce when I was in middle school, both of my parents eventually remarried, and my father and stepmother adopted a 1 year old boy, then a newborn boy a few years later.  Casey is now 10 and Will is 6.
When I turned 16 I developed a serious condition.  My first car was a 1987 Honda Accord DX with 175,000 miles and without the optional passenger side rearview mirror.  After smashing my Honda into a Cadillac due to a faulty defroster, from age 16-22 I owned on average one car per year, and sometimes more than one at a time.  And no I was not flipping them for a profit.  I inherited this condition from my father, who once bought a Mercedes on his way home from work because it was the first car he’d ever seen with headlight wipers.  It’s a clinical sickness that can only be cured by a terrible economy and a company vehicle.
After high school I headed up to UGA.  Most people don’t know that in between the cast of Andy Griffith and my current pet Fletch I had a pet squirrel for three months in college.  It’s weird, I know.  His name was Chip and I found him injured behind my accounting classroom.  I tried to put him back in his tree four times, but he chased after me and climbed up on my shoulder each time.  So, I went to class with him in my backpack, took him to the vet, then took him home.  He was a baby so I literally had to mix formula and bottle feed him 6 times a day.  Eventually he got older and ate off a corn block in a cat carrier.  He lived in my room and was quite happy sitting on my shoulder while I watched TV, grilled out in the driveway with my neighbors, and did homework.  That is, until my roommate went outside with Chip on his shoulder and his dog Princess tried to eat Chip.  Chip escaped into the woods and was never seen again.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I played basketball, baseball, and soccer every year through high school and have played for three years in the City of Savannah men’s softball league.  Other than that, I try to hunt and fish as much as I can afford to, drink a couple of beers with my friends as often as possible, and play guitar for my church and local restaurants/bars whenever I can.   My wife and I are members of Christ Church downtown.  I don’t have much time to read these days, although I enjoy it.  The last book I read was “Environmental Science for Dummies” in 2002.  It was so insightful that three days later I got a job at KCC as an Environmental Scientist and to this day no one knows I was actually a Fashion major in college.
Times are tough right now, what is one piece of advice that you'd give to new college grads in any field?
Despite the economy, I really enjoy being an Environmental Scientist.  But during these tough times, if I could give advice to a recent college grad, especially fashion majors, it would be: stay in school.  Or go bartend in the Caribbean.
What do you plan to do when you retire?
When I’m done being a scientist, I’d like to retire in Savannah and continue working as a captain part time, and have a farm somewhere outside of Savannah where I can keep livestock.  My father has a cattle ranch in Arizona and I love working with horses and cattle.  Hopefully when I retire I’ll have the money to support that very expensive hobby.
Freeform...

Now I’ve been married to my wife Landon for almost 2 years and we have a dog named Fletch, who’s been with me since my sophomore year of college.  My wife is awesome and the three of us are very happy.  If my house was burning down and I could only save one person, I’d choose my wife but the house would probably burn down around us while I was trying to decide.
Why I love Kern-Coleman...
I love working at Kern-Coleman, in large part because my coworkers are great friends and we all get off at noon on Fridays.  And since we’re so close, you should all be aware of my many nicknames.  Various friends and family also occasionally call me Chuck, Charlie, C Dub, Chuck Daddy, Chucky Poo, Chucky Baby, Big C, Chewy, Chewbacca, or Warren Beatty.  Take your pick.
